This year’s Oscars took place on Sunday night with some poignant moments and recognition. In a ceremony that was held with an attempt to return to normalcy, the red carpet was maskless and there were minimal zoom appearances. The main story from the awards was arguably from the Best Director category. Chloe Zhao became the first female of color, the first Chinese woman and only the second female director to win Best Director for the movie “Nomadland” on Sunday. This year’s Oscars ceremony marked the first time more than one female filmmaker was recognized and nominated for best director in a single year. Before this year, only five female filmmakers had ever been recognized with Kathryn Bigelow becoming the first and only women director awarded Best Director for the movie “Hurt Locker” in 2010. Also scooping the award for Best Picture, Chloe Zhao made history this year.

India’s COVID crisis in light of the second wave hitting the country has seen hospitals pushed to breaking point and oxygen supplies running dangerously low. Doctors have said that people are now stockpiling medicines and oxygen tanks as things only look set to continue to worsen. Recording another 352,991 new cases on Monday, breaking its own global record for a fifth day running, the nation now has the highest recorded number of deaths.

In Brooklyn, New York, New Yorkers come out in memory of and to celebrate the life of  late rapper and actor Earl DMX Simmons. More than 1,000 people gathered on Saturday at a memorial event outside the Barclays center with members of the Ruff Riders motorcycle club riding in procession followed by the monster truck carrying DMX’s coffin.

There were protests in Paris, France over the court decision which declared the man accused of the murder of Sarah Halimi. The Court of Cassation, while endorsing the anti-Semitic nature of the crime, confirmed the criminal irresponsibility of the murderer. And in London,  thousands of people marched through Central London in protest of what the demonstrators call Ethiopia’s genocidal war on the region of Tigray.

In sport, Manchester City celebrated with the Carabao Cup after victory over Spurs on Sunday. The final, held at Wembley Stadium, saw Manchester City lift the League cup for the record breaking fourth consecutive year. The final was held in front of 8,000 supporters, including 2,000 from each side.

In the Barcelona Open, Rafael Nadal held off his Greek opponent, Stefanos Tsitsipas to win an epic final. This is the twelfth title claimed by Nadal.
