Their images have informed, moved, and sometimes changed the course of history, but tragically, many of these brave storytellers have lost their lives in the process. Others have been injured or continue to work in dangerous places, risking their lives daily to bring us the stories.
World Photography Day: Celebrating the Resilience of Photojournalists and Journalists in Conflict Zones
By Esin Karakas and Fatemeh Roshan
On World Photography Day, as we celebrate the power of images and the artists who capture them, it is also important to honor those photographers who have paid the ultimate price in pursuit of truth. Most of these individuals have ventured into the heart of conflict zones, capturing the unfiltered realities of war, often at great personal risk. Only between 2023 and 2024 alone, 148 journalists and media workers have been killed, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.
The Rising Toll on Journalists and Photojournalists in Conflict Zones
The past year has been marked by escalating violence and conflicts across the world, from the ongoing war in Ukraine to the Middle East, Africa, and other regions. In volatile environments, journalists and photojournalists face multiple risks, including being targeted by hostile forces or subjected to abduction and torture. Yet, despite these dangers, countless journalists and photojournalists continue their work, undeterred. They persist in documenting the world’s most challenging stories, often at significant personal risk.
The rising death toll highlights the critical need for greater protection and accountability for crimes against journalists. International organizations, governments, and the global community must prioritize the protection of journalists. It is important to ensure that they can carry out their work without fear of violence or retribution.
Amadeja Plankl: Every Time You Feel a Wave of Emotion, Remember the Person Behind the Camera
Amadeja Plankl, Director of International Partnerships for Editorial & Creative Content at IMAGO, reflects on the vital role journalists play in our lives: “The dedication of these journalists, who tirelessly bring us stories, reveal the true state of the world we live in and often remind us to be kind to each other and appreciate what we have, is beyond words.”
Having worked as an Editor, specializing in news coverage, Amadeja reflects on her experience: “As someone who has been in close contact with journalists on the ground in conflict zones for years, I’ve tried to grasp what these brave individuals experience. However, unless you’ve been there yourself, I think it’s impossible to fully comprehend. This is why it’s so important to honor them and to remember those who have lost their lives in order to open the world’s eyes.”
She emphasizes the challenges photojournalists and journalists face and the critical importance of their work: “So, every time you see a photo or video that may be difficult to watch, and every time you simply feel a wave of emotion, remember the person behind the camera. That person has witnessed these events firsthand, risking their life to evoke those emotions in us and remind us that, not far away, others are living a very different reality.”
Acknowledging the Brave Souls Behind the Lens
Each of the more than 100 journalists and photojournalists killed in recent years had a story to tell, a mission that drove them, and a body of work that helped the world better understand the events shaping our times.
On this World Photography Day, we honor not only those we have lost but also those who continue to risk their lives to bring us the images and stories that shape our understanding of the world.
