Rishi Sunak has taken over as Prime Minister after Liz Truss, who would have served only 50 days. IMAGO takes a look at the chaos unfolding in the United Kingdom over the last several months.
Chaos in the UK – Rishi Sunak and angry protesters
Sunak, the former Chancelor and also the new Conservative Party leader after Penny Mordaunt and Boris Johnson withdrew from the running, will be the first non-white Prime Minister in the United Kingdom’s history. Liz Truss, who replaced Boris Johnson upon his resignation back in July, resigned from her post last Thursday after a failed budget and persisting financial turmoil, becoming the shortest serving UK Prime Minister.
This shifting of powers, yet again, comes amidst chaos in the UK both in politics and in the streets, with countless protests combating the political instability, high cost of living and fuel, climate change, Brexit, and also in the wake of the shooting of Chris Kaba by Police back in September.
Sunak has faced criticism from the Labour Party who had called for a general election, as well as from activists who have been staging sit-ins in London to protest Sunak and the fuel crisis.
