This week, the world will watch Joe Biden’s inauguration as the 46th president of the United States. This weekend saw the US government deploy no less than 25, 000 troops, Capitol Police and FBI special operations units in Washington as threats reach their peak after the recent assault on the Capitol Building.
There were also riots in the Netherlands capital as several thousand people took to the streets to protest against the Dutch coronavirus lockdown. The unauthorized demonstration took place in Amsterdam on Sunday with none wearing masks, or adhering to imposed rules and carrying signs reading “Freedom: stop this siege”. And they weren’t the only ones, over in Paris the gathering of the March For Life took place with protesters turning out for the annual demonstration which was created in 2005.
Polo Bawa, a century-old tradition fishing festival in Bangladesh was held this weekend with hundreds of people taking part in knee deep water with a polo and a bamboo-made fishing trap. The festival, that takes place in late winter every year saw over 300 people from neighboring villages take part and inspire the younger generations to keep the tradition alive.
In sport, it was announced that Phil Neville will step down as head coach of England Women with immediate effect amid reports he may be heading to Inter Miami to reunite with former team-mate David Beckham. Therese Johaug took part in the women’s cross-country skiathlon this weekend, during the Norwegians National Ski Championship which also saw the men’s cross-country race and the slalom dominated by Foss-Solevaag.
